East Midlands Ceramics’ close relationship with Schlüter-Systems Ltd ensures we can always recommend the correct solution so all tiling installations are fully protected.

Edge Profiles for Floor Coverings

Where floor tiles join other surfaces such as timber, carpet, vinyl or laminate, the tiles can crack, chip and even debond from the substrate. Problems will occur whenever the edge of the tile isn’t protected. It’s particularly common in commercial applications, such as shops, hotels and offices. But even in domestic applications the edges of the tiles can easily chip just with people walking over them. Using a transition profile from Schlüter-Systems Ltd will protect the edge of the tile, as well as improving the appearance of the installation.

Profiles such as the original Schlüter-SCHIENE finish tiled surfaces and protect the outer edges of ceramic tile and natural stone coverings from mechanical impact.

The profiles of the Schlüter-RENO range create a smooth transition between adjoining floor coverings while Schlüter-DECO has a wide visible surface for creating decorative joint designs. All finishing profiles from Schlüter-Systems Ltd contribute to the aesthetic and lasting appearance of tiled floors.

Wall Corners and Edge Profiles

Many tiles on the market today don’t have a glazed, finished edge, which means it is unattractive when it forms an outer corner on a wall or windowsill. This can easily be overcome, using trim and transition profiles from Schlüter-Systems Ltd. They are available in a wide variety of materials, colours, surface finishes and cross-sections, to co-ordinate with the tiles and grout, making it possible to create exciting, attractive designs. Specially engineered profiles are ideal for providing the dual function of combining an attractive finish, with protecting the vulnerable outer edge of the corner.

Schlüter-JOLLY, Schlüter-RONDEC and Schlüter-QUADEC profiles provide a highly durable and decorative finishing for wall coverings and skirtings made of ceramic tile and natural stone.

With a variety of material finishes, including aluminium, stainless steel and brass, along with several choices of colour, there is plenty of opportunity to create individual designs using Schlüter-PROFILES. Matching inside and outside corner pieces are available with some of the ranges, giving elegant connections and doing away with the need for mitred corners.

Stair Nosing Profiles

Stair nosing profiles from Schlüter-Systems Ltd. are specially designed to protect the front edge of the stairs from wear and damage, preventing the installation from failing, while also providing a high degree of visibility. There are several profiles within the product range, including DDA compliant profiles, each designed for particular types of applications.

The edges of stairs are exposed to heavy mechanical stresses and represent a high risk for injuries. Because of their slip resistant design and excellent visibility, Schlüter-TREP stair nosing profiles improve safety while protecting the front edge of the stairs from damage.

Movement Joint and Control Joint Profiles

Ceramic and stone tiles can be subjected to a variety of strains and stresses caused by movement, leading to tiles bulging, cracking or becoming detached from the substrate. The correct placing of movement joints from Schlüter-Systems Ltd protects tiling installations, guaranteeing their long-lasting integrity, by compensating for the movement of tiles which extends down through the bed and screed layer below. Therefore these stress-relieving joints are an essential part of any tiling installation and should be incorporated at the design stage.

The profiles in the Schlüter-DILEX range offer maintenance free and functional solutions for all relevant movement joints in tile coverings. The range includes profile types for movement joints and control joints, as well as edge and transition joints.

All the profiles are installed at the same time as the tile covering. A wide variety of Schlüter-DILEX profiles in various material combinations are available to protect against movement caused by the expected mechanical or chemical stresses in the tiled surface.

Waterproofing / Uncoupling / Drainage / Sound Insulation

Specifiers are often surprised to learn that tiled surfaces cannot be guaranteed waterproof without special, additional protection. Impervious grout and water-resistant adhesive do not necessarily stop water seeping through, and the damage caused by water ingress into the fabric of the building can be extensive. Schlüter-Systems Ltd. has a full systems solution to all waterproofing, drainage and acoustic needs, along with providing an uncoupling function to prevent shear stresses being transferred from the substrate to the tiled surface.

Protective membranes provide solutions to even the trickiest tiling challenge. Schlüter-DITRA has been a proven solution for uncoupling and bonded waterproofing for more than 20 years.

Schlüter-KERDI is a waterproofing mat that is integrated into the tile assembly, forming part of a complete systems solution, with sealing bands, corners and pipe collars. Schlüter-KERDI-DRAIN floor drainage system provides a secure bond between the drain and the waterproofing membranes. The sealing adhesive Schlüter-KERDI-COLL completes the guaranteed waterproofing system from a single source.

As the first ever passive capillary bonded drainage system, Schlüter-DITRA-DRAIN uncouples and ventilates tiled coverings on balconies and terraces.

Additionally, Schlüter-DITRA-SOUND provides sound insulation for tiled floors, significantly reducing sound transmission, while bridging cracks in damaged substrates.

Balcony Finishing Profiles and Gutter Systems

Schlüter-Systems Ltd offers everything for the complete assembly of a balcony from a single source, ranging from area drainage to bonded waterproofing assemblies and from uncoupling and edge protection profiles to gutter systems. Balconies and terraces constructed properly with Schlüter-Systems products are permanently damage free, even under extreme weather conditions.

Schlüter provides a complete system of Schlüter-BARA profiles for edge finishing and Schlüter-BARIN gutter elements for the drainage of ceramic and natural stone assemblies on balconies and terraces.

The system is designed to match the drainage system Schlüter-TROBA, the uncoupling and bonded waterproofing system
Schlüter-DITRA and the innovative, passive capillary bonded drainage system Schlüter-DITRA-DRAIN.

Covering Assemblies

Schlüter-BEKOTEC is a modular screed system which allows for easier installation than traditional floor construction and is far less labour-intensive. It assures a crack-free ceramic tile and natural stone covering above a screed and insulating layer. The screed can be installed with or without underfloor heating pipes. Surface movement joints are only required in line with industry recommendations and can therefore be incorporated to suit any aesthetic design of the tiled floor.

Schlüter-BEKOTEC is a modular floor assembly system that can be constructed very quickly. It is thin, will not buckle and does not develop tensions, successfully eliminating stress build-up due to shrinkage, which occurs during the curing of the screed.

Underfloor Heating

The Schlüter-BEKOTEC-THERM ceramic thermal comfort floor is the solution for all underfloor heating needs. It is an energy-efficient and quick-reacting modular assembly system that also protects a rigid ceramic tile and natural stone surface, preventing the tile or stone surface cracking and debonding.

Using Schlüter-BEKOTEC-THERM gives the whole underfloor heating assembly a low construction height, so the screed mass to be heated is comparatively small. This means the radiant heated floor is easily regulated and can be operated with especially low supply temperatures. With most ceramic installations, the minimum screed depth above the pipe is only 8mm. Single room packs are also available for rooms up to 15m2 and 30m2
